Best Pop Songs of the Decade

25 Best Pop Songs of the Decade

Elizabeth Bromstein
So, this week it was announced that people in some British poll had voted Rihanna's 'Umbrella' the best song of the decade. And the rest of the list was as follows:

1. Rihanna featuring Jay-Z - Umbrella
2. t.a.T.u - All The Things She Said
3. Avril Lavigne - Sk8r Boi
4. Britney Spears - Everytime
5. Oasis - The Importance Of Being Earnest
6. Will Young - Leave Right Now
7. Katy Perry - Hot N Cold
8. Amy Winehouse - Back To Black
9. Madonna - Hung Up
10. Kylie Minogue - Can't Get You Out Of My Head

So…interesting. Got me thinking about the decade in music and my own top songs, which couldn't be narrowed to 10 and had to expand to 20, then 25. Here's the list, even though the decade isn't quite over yet. I'm sure I've forgotten something and, try and try as I might, I couldn't put them in order. I stuck to pop songs, because we had to draw the line somewhere and, while you NEED to go out a buy a record by Dan Reeder, RIGHT NOW, it seemed like opening the floor to obscure folk musicians and whatnot would make this impossible. There's a lot of good music out there. Here are the top 25 pop songs of the decade, as I see it.

Ms. Bronstein: did you listen to a pop radio station for 90 minutes in order to obain your 25, ahem, " 'Best' Songs of the Decade"? Every song on your list is fluff; every artist mediocre at best (with the exception of Johnny Cash). Since by your own admission your definition of "pop music" is very loose, why didn't you include Bruce Springsteen's "The Wrestler"? It won some prestigious awards. Have you heard the song yet? Heck, did you know it existed before now? Is it because Bruce is not black or a wannabe black like Timberlake and Eminem?

It's really sad that you have such poor exposure to real music. I'm not sure that you should be posting articles about "top pop hits", since you only seem to be interested in one genre. A very sad state of affairs indeed, if this is the list representing the past decade in music.
Shush.
