First off, full disclosure: I've known Michael Buble for more than a decade and I have bragging rights for being the first journalist to ever write about him. He's one of the finest male vocalists of his generation, without a doubt, and not just because Tony Bennett said so. On this two-disc release that captures his show at New York's Madison Square Garden, we get a pretty good selection of the Buble repertoire, including songs he's co-written (Lost, Home, Everything), contemporary covers (I'm Your Man, Crazy Little Thing Called Love) and the lounge style stand-bys for which he's known (Me and Mrs. Jones, Call Me Irresponsible). We also get a glimpse backstage with interviews with Buble and his crew and his family members, with particular emphasis on grandpa Mitch, the man who greatly influenced his career. It's not a terribly in-depth look, but it's an accurate portrayal of Buble's personality, and the saucy charm that proves both alluring for fans and the tabloid media who love it when he really lets loose. Buble is naturally funny, and we see that here when he jumps into the arms of his bodyguard (a friend from school) or teases a couple in the audience about having sex later that night. He asks that they speak his name at some point so he can be part of the experience. And hilariously, when he enters the concert hall the producers have made it look like he's a fighter entering a boxing ring, shot in slow motion drama and capturing a look of fierce determination on his face.
